The Sports and Adventure Club of Symbiosis School of Media and Communication, Bengaluru presented the flagship event of the year “THE ORIGINS CUP 2019” from 22nd to 24th Jan, 2019.
Cricket:
We had total 10 teams this year participating in the cricket tournament. We witnessed some nail- biting finishes and last ball winners. We have seen crowd from other colleges turn up to support their teams which really made us happy. Cricket knockouts were played on Day1, Semis and finals were played on Day3.
Basketball:
This year we had several colleges participating and it was amazing to watch all the teams watching from sidelines. Even though teams got knocked out they still stayed back and enjoyed the other matches. Throughout the event basketball court was surrounded by spectators. One team was accompanied by their sports coach who was really happy to see the way things were organized and personally appreciated the efforts put in by team SSMC. He was present throughout his team’s matches as a motivational support and as a mentor.
The Day 1 kicked off with Cricket Group stage matches, Badminton and Table tennis fixtures.
The Day 2 saw Basketball group stage matches and finals, highlight of the day being crowd surrounding the court and supporting teams throughout the event. Badminton and Table Tennis finals were played on Day2.
The Day 3 Cricket and Football finals were played on the Day3.
We had 130 participants from outside Symbiosis and we were personally appreciated by the teams for the way we communicated to them regarding the event and making sure everyone had a comfortable fixture timing and made sure everyone left with happy memories.
Another highlight of this year’s Origins Cup was that the events were not confined to students. Faculty and staff joined in and participated in the competitions.

Symbiosis School of Media and Communication Bengaluru (SSMC-B), hosted the biennial media and communication conference- Communication Quotient 2019 at SSMC-B on January 19, 2019. The conference theme ‘Contemporary Media and Communication Ecology: Discourses and Dynamics’ was framed with an objective to generate a dialogue and understand contemporary dynamics within the field of media and communication. The platform was to synergize students, faculties, Alumni and industry experts to connect, communicate and converge.
An intellectually stimulating panel discussion in relation to the conference theme which included the following industry stalwarts was the highlight of the conference.
Young scholars presented research paper with interesting insights into the media and communication and in lieu of the broader topic ‘Contemporary Media and Communication Ecology: Discourses and Dynamics.’ The paper presentation session was divided into three panels based on the commonalities of the papers. Some of the research papers included campaign building for gender advocacy, unpacking the emic-etic perspectives of ethnographic research at Indian EDM festivals, understanding of emoticons on online feedback system, commonalities in advertising, gamification increasing brand awareness followed by co creation and co destruction – a study on consumer engagement with e-commerce.
As part of the “Touchbase” an Alumni connect, another interesting panel discussion which comprised of past students of SSMC-B and who are now leading industry professionals was part of the conference. The Touchbase alumni panel discussion was on the theme ‘Campus to Corporate – Reflections and Learnings’ had the following Alumni:
The discussion was a way to encourage present students of the opportunity the campus has provided them to make them industry ready and carve a niche for themselves in the competitive industry. The conference highlighted the changes in the media industry which are now mainly driven by ‘disruptions’ and ‘innovations’. The focus was on the volatility, dynamics and the smart generation – the enablers of the 21st century. Living in a world that is moving towards an integrated marketing communications arena from a compartmentalized world. CQ’19 ended on a cultural note with an astounding performance that had spectacular vocals from singers and showcased graceful dance performance.
SSMC-B has constituted mandatory committees that deal with internal complaints, grievance redressal to deal with issues that impede a congenial academic learning atmosphere in the institute.
These committees are formed as per SIU/UGC norms.
GRIEVANCE REDRESSAL COMMITTEE

INTERNAL COMPLAINTS COMMITTEE
The Institute – Internal Complaints Committee- has been constituted for the academic year 2018-19 in order to address sexual and other harassment complaints of students and staff at SSMC- Bengaluru.
The Committee deals with issues relating to Sexual and other harassment complaints at Symbiosis School of Media & Communication, Bengaluru. It is applicable to all students, staff and faculty.
Details of the Composition of Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) and its Members are available with the institute office and displayed on the institute notice board with contact details.
Students must ensure that they know the details of the committee and note it down for their reference.
ANTI-RAGGING COMMITTEE
The purpose of the committee is to work pro-actively to address ragging related complaints, build awareness and work towards minimizing instances of ragging in maintaining Symbiosis School of Media and Communication – Bangalore – a ragging free campus.
Objectives of the Anti- Ragging Committee:

Symphoria’19, the flagship event of SSMC-B was conducted on August 24th which is a cultural inter – collegiate event.
The cultural extravaganza included event featured fashion show, Music, Dance, Mr and Ms Symphoria contests as well as online competitions for Photography and Short film in the form of Thumb stoppers.
Famous personalities like Mr Saad Khan- Indian Film Director, Screenwriter, Acting teacher, and Ms. Vaishnavi Chandran Menon- Model, Actor, Dancer, were the Guest of honour for the day.
The judges for various competitions were the stalwarts in their respective fields like –
* Ms Pratibha Suanshimath – Mrs Asia International & Mrs India 2015, Organiser and Director Mrs India Karnataka/Kerala, Regional Director Mrs India, Model, Dancer and Actress and Director Pratis Events.
* Ms Deepika Tantradi -Carnatic classical and Bollywood Vocalist Playback Singer.
* Mr. Danish Abdi -Singer, Music Artist, Co-founder of Muse.
* Mr Ankit Piplani-Radio Jockey, Anchor.
* Ms Tripti Arvind -Mrs. India World 2017, Educationist and Corporate Trainer.
The Symbiosis School of Media and Communication Bengaluru (SSMC-B), hosted the inter-collegiate fest SYMPHORIA 2018 at SSMC-B campus in Electronic City, Bengaluru on July 28, 2018. The fest brought out variety and diversity with a grand affair featuring renowned judges to grace the flagship event with the theme to connect, communicate and converge. The fest was a mix of music, dance, theatre, quizzes and fashion that brought out the creative side of the participants as they finally ascended to the SSMC stage following weeks of practice. From SIBM, XIME, NMKRV to Indus Business Academy, the students got a chance to showcase their multi-faceted skills throughout the day with unique events.
Chief Guest, Mr Subodh Sankar- Owner of Atta Galatta, a boutique bookstore and cafe, graced the occasion as he shared his enlightening advice to the numerous college students in attendance. The quiz competition ‘Quizards’ on Media and Business raised the competitive spirit of the various college participants as the students put their thinking caps on as Quiz Master Mr Ochintya Sharma, CEO- True Qare presided over the event. Quizards brought out unique visual and written tests that certainly kept the teams on their toes.
Touchbase- The SSMC-B alumni connect series presented an astounding theatrical performance brought to the stage by SSMC-B alumni and Production Head of Project Podium, Ms Aloka Chatterjea as they performed Edward Alee’s enthralling’ ‘The Zoo Story’ depicting various phases of the character’s emotions with gripping dark psychological suspense thriller. The play featured a truly spectacular performance by the cast with perfect interpretive dance, acting, music use and lighting.
The fest also presented art forms like singing, dance and fashion show competition such as, ‘Sur Sangam’the singing competition that featured spectacular vocals from singers across Bengaluru institute was judged by Ms Mandira Ghosh. ‘Nrityaraag’ showcased graceful dancers and energetic performances ranging from Hip-hop, EDM, Bollywood to traditional Bharatnatyam and Kathak and was judged by Ms Shilpa Shitkondad. The much awaited Fashion Show titled ‘Panache- World Is One Family’ highlighted diverse looks and breaking stereotypes with haute couture looks by each college’s interpretations that were visually colorful and created an impact with unique looks. The Fashion Show was judged by Mrs Veena Bhat. An engaging Valedictory speech by RJ and Anchor, Mr Ankit Piplani concluded Symphoria as he shared his knowledge and experience in the field of radio and gave a few lines of advice to colleges present. The renowned anchor, presenter and host shared stories from his own life and highlighted a known motto- ‘Aim to die young as late as possible’ Followed by the concluding address, Symphoria winners were announced with prizes and certificates for their brilliant work in each event. XIME, SIBM, SIMC, IBA and NMKRV won certificates and prizes in a variety of events as the night concluded with the national anthem.

The induction programme for SSMC Bangalore is an institute orientation programme for the incoming students giving them an overview of the media industry and an orientation about the institute where they would be spending two important years of their academic life. The incoming batch is educated of their activities in academic programme i.e. courses, credit based evaluation system, continuous assessment, sports and co-curricular activities, administrative rules and regulations. The faculty and the staff are introduced and the mentor system in explained to the students. The institute brings out a handbook every year for students, which contains exhaustive details about the programme, courses, academic calendar, grading system, amenities available in the institute, collaborations with international universities, health insurance, ragging awareness and other support services.

On the occasion of Installation 2019, Ms Sudipta Gupta, VP – Human Resource, The Practice and Mr. Aaditya Vidyarthi, Head – Asia Pacific & Europe, PROLIM Global Corporation addressed the students reiterated the need to grow from a good leader to a great leader and inspired students saying to be a great leader you need to be at the center of the team and to horn these skills during their tenure as council.
The incoming batch of 2019-2021 was also introduced to various clubs of the institute – Advertising, Public Relations and Media Management, which were academically aligned while “SAC” emphasized on co-curricular activities.
The Rotaract Club of SSMC-B was also introduced to the new batch which helps in imparting a holistic learning experience to the students.

The incoming batch of 2018-2020 was also introduced to various clubs of the institute – Advertising, Public Relations and Media Management, in addition to the Rotaract Club of SSMC-B – that help in imparting a holistic learning experience to the students.
A new initiative by the institute called “Touch Base” was also launched this year. Touch Base is an Alumni Connect Program developed with the intention of connecting the Alumni of the institute with the current students which is a platform for knowledge sharing at SSMC-B.
Installation of the Students Council is a solemn affair held every year at SSMC-B, where the earlier council formally transfers the authority and responsibility to the newly appointed student council. The new student council thereafter takes an oath with full valor and pledge to work for the betterment of the institute. On the occasion of Installation 2017, Mr. Samar Singh Sheikhawat, Sr. VP – Marketing, United Breweries Limited shared his insights on ‘ Millennial and Real-life Experiences’. The incoming batch of 2017-2019 was introduced to various clubs of Advertising, Public Relations and Media Management of SSMC-B.
Our students are exposed to social responsibility projects through the year where they work under faculty guidance and use their skill sets to contribute towards social issues including in the areas of education, health, and other civic issues. These activities initiate them into better understanding of curricular subjects such as corporate citizenship or corporate social responsibility.
Our annual alumni meet, Reminiscence is a forum to reconnect our alumni with current students where they share their experiences and go down memory lane, reliving the past and renewing new commitments. The event gives an opportunity for the present students to rediscover, understand and rebuild their area of interest through their Alumni. It is an event where fun meets intelligence, experience meets novice that gives the students a real time scenario on what is trending in the market and where is the market lagging in terms of innovation.
Symbiosis School of Media and Communication, Bengaluru, hosted the Alumni Meet – REMINISCENCE 2022. The anticipation of finally getting together again after the pandemic was thick in the air. The alumni reunion aimed to reconnect with the alumni and celebrate their success and many achievements. All of the alumni and eminent guests were expected to dress in accordance with the “Glitter & Glam” theme of the event.
At 4 p.m., the alumni and guests started to arrive at the college. The student council from the class of 21–23 greeted them, post which they went on a tour of the campus, where they went back to the classrooms they had studied and discussed the developments that had taken place since they left the college. Alumni also talked to the students and gave them motivational talks about how to get ready for placements.
Lamp lighting ceremony
The Alumni Meet started with an invocation song followed by a lamp lighting ceremony by the Director of SSMC, Dr. N Thilaka, and other esteemed faculty to start the event in good spirits.
Address by Ex-Director of SSMC- B, Professor Maya Chakravarti Vishwanathan
Prof. Maya Chakravarti Vishwanathan, former director of SSMC-B, addressed the gathering. She stated that this was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with her colleagues and revisit the Institute with fond recollections. She concluded by wishing success to all the students in their future efforts.
Cultural Show
The class of 2021–2023 put on a fantastic cultural show. The show was a visual feast, with dancing and singing performances, and the guests were entertained throughout with fun activities and games.
Address by Professor K.S Narhari
Professor K.S. Narhari, who is the most well-liked professor among the students, gave a speech to the gathering and praised the organized and thoughtful way in which the program was put together. He closed the address with a wonderful song, which was extremely well received by the audience, and he gave away some really interesting insights from the industry.

The Director of SSMC-B, Dr. N Thilaka, presented the vote of thanks. She thanked the Alumni for attending the Alumni Meet and making it a very wonderful and memorable occasion. She congratulated the different event organizers (teaching, non-teaching staff, and the passionate students of batch 2021-202), whose hard work and commitment made the event possible, and the administration’s support and direction that made Alumni Meet 2022 a resounding success.
Gala Dinner
Post the vote of thanks, the alumni, students, and other guests were served a “gala dinner.” The food and hospitality were praised by the guests. A memento was presented to all the alumni, thanking them for their presence at the event.
Indeed, it was a night filled with lots of great memories to look back on. The SSMC-B Alumni Meet 2022 was a huge success, with alumni from all of the batches from 2010 to 2022 in attendance, along with all of the current and former esteemed faculty members.
Symbiosis Centre for Entrepreneurship Excellence Development (SEED)-the entrepreneurship cell of SSMC-B was launched on July 8, 2016.
SEED aims to nurture an environment for creating an entrepreneurship culture in the campus and assisting budding entrepreneurs by providing them with necessary resources.
Ms. Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, CEO, Biocon LTD, inaugurated SEED and delivered a keynote address on Entrepreneurship. She enlightened the students by sharing her journey on how she became an entrepreneur and her mantra for success.
She quoted “To me, Entrepreneurship is about taking the idea to the market and then shaping, validating and commercializing it.”
Mr. Shalabh Mittal CEO, School of Social Entrepreneurs India, Mr. Naveen Lakkur, Innovation coach, Strategic Consultant and Advisor, Mr. Samir Chaudhary, Founder Media Ant, Mr.Sanjay Anandram–Member Nasscom, TiE, IIM-Bangalore, and INSEAD business school, were the other speakers at the event, who helped kindle the flame of entrepreneurship in the minds of the students.
Symbiosis School of Media and Communication – Bengaluru (SSMC-B) believes in giving the best to its students with a blend of academics and industry insights. Recently, SSMC-B in association with the esteemed Public Relations Council of India (PRCI) launched its first chapter of Young Communicators Club (YCC) on 24th August 2017. It provides a platform for our young minds to be mentored by the industry professionals through various activities such as workshops, seminars, events and so on. PRCI comprises professionals in the field of Public Relations, Communication, and Advertising that align to the specialization offered at SSMC-B as a part of its MBA program in Communication Management. It’s an incredible opportunity for SSMC-B students to learn the best practices from PRCI and become an industry ready professional.
